Understanding South African VAT

Value-Added Tax (VAT) is an indirect tax levied on the consumption of goods and services in South Africa. It is administered by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and is governed primarily by the Value-Added Tax Act, No. 89 of 1991. The standard VAT rate is currently 15%, which applies to most goods and services.

Certain items, such as basic foodstuffs, exports, and international services, may be zero-rated, while others like residential rental accommodation and certain financial services may be exempt from VAT. Businesses that make taxable supplies of more than R2.3 million per annum must register for VAT, while those with taxable supplies of more than R120,000 but not more than R2.3 million may apply for voluntary registration.

How VAT is Calculated

VAT can be calculated in two ways depending on whether the price is exclusive or inclusive of VAT:

VAT Exclusive Calculation
When the price does not include VAT, you add 15% of the base price to determine the total amount payable.
Formula:
VAT = Amount × 15%
Total = Amount + VAT

VAT Inclusive Calculation
When the price already includes VAT, you extract the VAT portion by dividing the total amount by 1.15.
Formula:
Exclusive Amount = Total / 1.15
VAT = Total - Exclusive Amount
